MISSION STATEMENT

SIG Writing aims to provide a forum for exchange of ideas about writing and promoting research collaboration between writing researchers from different countries as well as from different disciplines, such as education, psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, literary studies and rhetorics. Examples of topics we deal with are:

  • the cognitive, social and developmental processes involved in writing,
  • the functions of writing in different social and institutional contexts,
  • the design of writing instruction in various educational settings.

Our activities include writing-related publications, conferences and information facilities. Among the most important activities of SIG writing are publications on many topics related to the scientific study of writing. These include the Journal of Writing Research (http://jowr.org/), our publication archive (http://www.sigwritingpublications.org/) and the book series "Studies in Writing".

PUBLICATIONS

The stimulation, introduction and edition of publications on many topics related to the scientific study of writing is among the most important activities of the SIG Writing group. These include the SIG Writing prepublication and archive site, a collection of the proceedings from successful SIG Writing conferences, the acclaimed Studies in Writing book series, and the on-line journal Journal of Writing Research.

Studies in Writing book series

In 1994, SIG Writing decided to initiate a book series on Writing Research to create a forum for writing research, which was lacking at that time. Members of the SIG Writing formed the “Studies in Writing” editorial board, and the SIG coordinators, Gert Rijlaarsdam and Eric Espéret acted as series editors.

Books in this series include edited volumes and research monographs. The initial volumes were published by Amsterdam University Press (1-6), then moved to Kluwer Academic Publishers/Springer (7-16), then passed to Elsevier (17-21), who then sold the portfolio to Emerald (22-26). As of Volume 27, Brill acquired the Studies in Writing series and is the current publisher.

Click here to visit the current portfolio at Brill and here to access Studies in Writing's current catalog.

Current Series Editors are Raquel Fidalgo from the Area of Developmental and Educational Psychology of the University of León (rfidr@unileon.es) and Thierry Olive from the Research Center on Cognition and Learning of the National Center for Scientific Research-CNRS (thierry.olive@univ-poitiers.fr).

Journal of Writing Research

Journal of Writing Research is an international peer-reviewed on-line journal, freely accessible for all. The journal started in 2008 and originated from the initiative of several SIG Writing members who significantly contribute to the editorial work. The current editors of the journal are Luuk van Waes (University of Antwerp, Belgium), Gert Rijlaarsdam (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands), Mark Torrance (Nottingham Trent University, UK), Charles MacArthur, University of Delaware, USA, and Montserrat Castelló, Ramon Llull University, Spain

You can register for the journal's alert service at www.jowr.org.

The table of contents of the current issue is available here.
